Hulls Angels-The coming year

Friday 31 December 2010 · 14 comments

With one year ending and another about to begin Hulls Angels progresses into it's first full yar as a community gaming club. We have many intentions over the next twelve months to build on the growing community in the east riding and give you all opportunities to try something different.

Easy ways to pay
First of all we intend to make it easy for you to pay for your months wargaming activity. We intend to give you the opportunity to pay for a whole month at a massive discount compared to paying session by session, as little as 50p per visit. The more you visit the cheaper it becomes, at lest thats what you can tell the boss indoors.
Gaming Opportunities
We all seem to play the same games week in week out with the same old armies. Hulls Angels want to give you the opportunities to try something new. This year we are going to provide as many opportunities as we can or you to try out different games and ways of playing, from historical wargames like Flames of War to other wargames like Warmachine and Mailfaux.
Tournaments and Events
We have already run a number of events at the club and this year we have a full calender planned for next year, not just tournaments within the club but also chellenges against other GCN clubs visits to places like Warhammer world and Maelstrom. We will also be running a number of leagues and campaigns as the year goes on.
The Yorkshire Open
One of the major events we are running at the beginning of the year is the Yorkshire Open. A county wide tournament that covers both 40k and Warhammer with the winners of our days going on to compete at no less than warhammer world later in the year.
These are just some of the ways in with we intend to make wargaming more interesting in the east riding. If you can think of any other ways you would like to play any wargames then please contayct one of us and have a chat.

Thanks

payment in 2011

Extra! Extra! New ways to pay for your month’s wargaming in 2011

That’s right we are looking at making it even easier and cheaper to pay for your months wargaming. We are now into our second year as an established wargames club providing for Hull and the surrounding areas. What we want to do now is make coming to the club easier and more comfortable for everyone.
Sadly we have costs to cover so we must charge for you to enter the club. We do however want to make this as painless as possible for you all we are looking at charging a bulk cost for the month. After some discussion with some of the members and amongst the committee we have decided to charge as follows.
A month paying for 2 sessions a week would cost £20 at £2 a session. We are looking at giving you access every time we are open for a starting price of £15.

This means that you can come 4 times a week or 20 times a month for less that 50% of the cost it would normally cost if you paid per session.
Concessions for students and the unemployed will still be given a discount of 33% and will pay £10 per month.
You can pay this money in cash every month or you can set up a standing order to our bank account. Just talk to one of the committee to get this information.
This is the way we will be taking payment from January onwards if you have any questions please go to the section on the forum regarding payment or spea to one of us next week.

Thanks

Army Spotlight - Stirland Vampire Counts

Sunday 12 December 2010 · 2 comments

Good evening and welcome to another Army Spotlight. Tonight we have our first Fantasy army being shown to use by one of our fantastic painters Shane. So without furthur ado ill pass over to him.

“Stirland is a comparatively rustic and poor province that bore much of the sorrows wrought in the wars against the Vampire Counts. Its soldiers, just like its citizens, are frequently impoverished and their weapons and armour are typically simple. In fact, many of the state troops from Stirland cannot afford to maintain their uniforms of green and yellow, and wear only a token gesture to their traditional uniform. The rural nature of Stirland, and the frequent jibes that are levelled against its occupants, should not be confused with weakness on the part of the Stirlanders - in battle they are as devoted and ferocious as any Empire soldiers can be.”
The above passage was what inspired me to start a vampire counts army. I decided that my vampire general would have been a nobleman in Stirland, who during the vampire count’s invasions managed to contract vampirism and has been keeping it a secret ever since, slowly converting minor nobles and building a force of shambling dead.
The core of the force will be a unit of skeletons armed with tower shields lead by one of my general’s fledgling vampires, displaying the colours of the Stirland army (This was another reason I chose Stirland as I’d had problems painting yellow before and wanted to work on my technique)

Below are the first 19 skeletons and their vampire leader.

The second core part of the force is to be a unit of twenty zombies converted from the empire infantry sprues, bretonian militia sprues and the zombie frames. This unit will represent the peasant militia being armed with farming equipment and mismatched uniforms.

The first few zombies are show below.

I started this project in a completely different way to my usual method of buying what I think looks good and ending up with an unusable army. This time I wrote a thousand point list and bought all of the parts I’d need in one go and intend to build it up in five hundred point lumps once the initial army is complete. (The list was compiled during 6th edition so the units are quite / very small and will be increased in the next five hundred points, it is also built to be more fluffy than competitive)

Heroes:

1 vampire (general) - walking death, lord of the dead - flayed hauberk, sword of battle

1 vampire - avatar of death (hw + shield), walking death - sword of striking

Core:

20 zombies

19 skeletons (will contain hero) with champ, standard

5 dire wolves

Special:

15 graveguard (will contain hero) with champ, standard

5 black knights

Once this army is complete I intend to increase the sizes of all of the infantry units then add a nice big unit of ghouls. These I am converting from the flagellant and ghoul boxes to look like depraved peasants. I’m unsure whether to use the Stirland colours on these or to paint them in dirty browns and earthy tones (Opinions more than welcome)

Thanks Shane. it looks like the start of a fantastic looking army keep it up armies like this only make the games we play look better. So what do you think do you have any comments or ideas?

Thanks

Weekly Wargames News - Mantic

Friday 10 December 2010 · 5 comments

Evening all. Just a quick one for you tonight, Im off to see my new son who was born yesterday.

Mantic is a company who keep my belief in wargaming alive and kicking, they seem to be a company similar to what GW was at the beginning. The want to create wargames for interested parties. It seems to be more of a community based concept rather than a BIG BUSINESS like GW has become.

The stuff that Mantic have recently come out with is great, but the images that I have seen this week are by far the most exciting for me. The video on Beasts of war shows them best. Follow the link to see what I mean.

Or if you would like to look at the mantic site click here

Now I'm off to see my new son.

Deepthought - what about all those bits?

Thursday 9 December 2010 · 5 comments

I don't know about you but the picture above really rings bells for me. I have piles and piles like this in my house, and garage, and shed. Some are stored in boxes, some are still in their boxes and in turn they are in grouped boxes, some are clipped fromtheir fames and put carefully in a bits draw (I would like to point out that they were put there a long time ago when I had more free time) and most are just piled up and left to gather dust.

Now I know that you are thinking "Yeh so! we all have these piles of random model parts just in case we need them" The question I would like to ask is how much of the money you spend on your hobby is still sitting around on sprues gathering dust and not being used for anything constructive?

This for me riases more questions than answers and I would like to pass this out to the wonderful readers of this blog to discuss. Do you have any answer for the paradox that is piles and piles of sprues lying around. Do you know of anywhere you can get rid of them or swap needed parts with others. How do you deal with large sections of your money lying around doing nowt?

Over to you.

Thanks

Army Spotlight - Grimlaks Marorderz!

Sunday 5 December 2010 · 2 comments

Evening all.

Tonight we start our series on club members armies. Tonight we are looking at Marts Orks, Grimlaks Marorderz! A fine force that shows great examples with many of the elements of the hobby that we all hold dear, heres Mart to explain.

I have been playing Orks for two years now. I started them because I wanted to paint something roughly after a couple of years with Eldar.
I found very quickly a whole host of weathering techniques and such that as I kept painting I kept improving.
I think I now have the confidence to try and compete for a top army nomination with the next army I do - a pirate fleetKhorne CSM fleet known as Hells Teeth (I could call it Hulls Teeth now...
I aim to take a different list to each tourny I go to and the Kan list just seemed to fit with what I wanted.

My Shokk Attack Gun has provided all manner of of randomness that has literally brought me to tears! I have rolled a double one in 4 games now - not bad when thats out of 6 games! Sufficed to say I have dropped it now for another Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field.

Thanks Mart

Here are some images of the force as it stands now.

If you are interested in finding more out about Mart's Grimlaks Marorderz! just go to his Blog and have a look.

There are more arnies being photographed as we speak to be shown off to you. Watch this space for more.

Under the Micorscope

This week I thought I would cast the light on the clubs old friend Blue Boar Games. The club has had a strong connection with the website for quite some period now and any gamer, not just members of the club that shop there can benefit greatly. not only from cheap delivery but also a wide selection of gaming and roleplaying materials to be purchased. I caught up with Andy, the owner of BBG to ask some questions.

Hi Andy,

So why the name Blue Boar Games?

Ohhhhhh I think thats for me to know and you to work out.

Whats your ethos?

We want to sell good quality gaming, roleplaying and relaxation products at good prices with as little hassle to the customer as possible.

What are the main products that you sell?

Well we have a number of different products from board games, DVD's and Video games to most types of roleplaying and tabletop games alongside CCG's, books and toys.
Our roleplaying games cover most areas of interest from historic greats like Call of Cthulhu to newer games like Dark Heresy and our Tabletop wargames section covers everything fromm SF and Fantasy to historical games from all eras of interest.

So whats different about you then?

We really want gamers to get the best for their money. We offer 20% off most purchases and also offer free delivery to the local wargames club, Hulls Angels.

So how does the delivery bonus work for local gamers?

Well if you purchase a product from us and ask for it to be delivered to Hulls Angels For free you can then pick it up on any night that the club is open a wee after you have purchased it. We will send you an email telling you that it is art the club, all you have to do is go and see the guys at the club prove who you are and pick it up.

Thanks very much Andy see you soon.

As you can see if you are a member of the club then you will not only get 20% discount on all gaming and roleplaying products but you will also get them delivered free, I think youll find that there is a significant saving to be had here. You can access these savings by going to the webshop here and doing all your xmas shopping.

Deepthought - Choices Choices

Wednesday 1 December 2010 · 0 comments

I have recently been looking at a site called Tabeltop Fix quite closely. I am fascinated by the broad choice of producs for our hobby that are out there and it seems to me that we focus on a very small proportion of them most of the time.

We all have our favorites that we play all the time but what sort of game would you try if you had the chance? would it be a roleplaying game for the first time, a historical game or even CCG's?

go on tell us what would you play if you had the chance post a comment about your next direction in the hobby.

thanks
